Heatwave Scorches Odisha, Mercury Soars To 39.8°C In Bhubaneswar By 11AM

Bhubaneswar: Amid the heatwave warning, the Odisha capital was on the boil on Friday with mercury soaring to 39.8°C by 11.30 am.

Keonjhar was close second at 39.2°C followed by Balaosre and Jharsuguda at 38°C each, Rourkela at 37.8°C, Chandbali and Sambalpur at 37.4°C each and Hirakud 36.6°C, the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre informed. 

The weather agency has issued heatwave and warm night warning for several districts of the state till April 6. It has also forecast a a gradual rise in maximum temperature by 2-3°C due to prevailing northwesterly/westerly dry air and high solar insolation during the next 2 days and fall by 2-4°C at many places during the subsequent 2 days. The day temperature is expected to touch 40°C in twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack and soar to 43°C at Malkangiri, Boudh, Balangir, Titlagarh, Angul and Jharsuguda.

People have advised to take precautionary measure while going outside during day time between 11 am and 3 pm.

Thunderstorm with lightning accompanied with gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph may pull down the temperature by a few notches thereafter. There is also a forecast for light to moderate rain across the state during the next four days.

On Thursday, 7 places had registered temperature of 41°C or more with Malkangiri and Boudh being the hottest at 42°C followed by Angul and Balangir at 41.7°C , Jharsuguda at 41.6°C , and Bhawanipatna at 41°C

The twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack recorded 37.4°C and 38°C respectively.
