Heatwave Set To Return To Odisha After ‘Hot & Humid’ Pana Sankranti

Bhubaneswar: Heatwave is set to return to Odisha, which witnessed a substantial fall in temperature due to nor’wester induced rain and thunderstorm activity for five days after being scorched by blistering heat earlier this month.

While isolated light rain may occur for 3 days, yellow warning of hot and humid weather and heatwave has been issued for as many days from April 14.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), hot and humid weather condition may prevail at one or two places in Cuttack, Nayagarh, Boudh, Angul and Khurda districts on April 14. Heatwave is likely to impact some parts of the state in the subsequent two days.

Heatwave warning has been issued for Cuttack, Nayagarh, Malkangiri, Koraput, Angul, and Dhenkanal districts on April 15 and Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Angul, Nayagarh, Boudh, Cuttack, Kandhamal, Koraput, Malkangiri, Balasore, and Bhadrak on April 16.

During this period, the mercury is likely to soar to unprecedented levels with flow of dry, hot westerly-northwesterly winds towards Odisha gathering strengthen from Sunday onwards. The weather agency has predicted a gradual rise in the day temperature by 6-8 degree Celsius after 24 hours. The day temperature is likely to cross 40 degree Celsius in Bhubaneswar by April 16.

The thunderstorm activities had pull the temperature down by 7 degrees to 8 degrees C at many places in the state with four places in the state – Angul, Titlagarh, Sambalpur and Hirakud – on Thursday recording coolest day in April. Titlagarh registered the lowest-ever maximum temperature of 24 degree Celsius, followed by Sambalpur city (25.7), Hirakud (26.1 degree) and Angul (26.7).
