Bhubaneswar: Odisha may continue to experience intense thunderstorm activity till the end of this month as a cyclonic circulation persists over northwest of the state, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Thursday.
It further stated that Kalbaisakhi (Nor’wester) showers are likely to bring some relief, lowering temperatures by 2–3°C over the next two days. While no further heatwave warnings have been issued, hot and humid conditions are expected to persist in the coastal areas of the state until June 3.
On May 28, an orange warning of thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind (50-60 kmph) has been issued for the districts of Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj.
Heavy Rainfall may also occur in the afternoon/evening hours in Keonjhar district.
The MeT office further warned of thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind (40-50 kmph) in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places in the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Bargarh, Dhenkanal, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda and Nayagarh.
Sultry weather condition may prevail at isolated places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh,Angul, Keonjhar, Bargarh, Kalahandi, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Nuapada, Boudh, Sonepur Kandhamal and Balangir.
On May 29, thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind (50-60 kmph) may continue in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places in the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj.
Heavy rainfall is also likely in Keonjhar, Angul, Deogarh and Sambalpur.
Thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind (40-50 kmph) may also occur in Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda and Nayagarh.
The national forecaster has warned of squally weather with wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmphalong & off North Odisha Coast on May 28-29. Fishermen in this region have been advised not to venture into the sea, which is likely to turn rough to very rough.
On May 30, thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind (50-60 kmph) may continue in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places in the districts of Bargarh, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sunaergarh, Jharsuguda and Sambalpur.
Heavy rainfall may also occur in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda and Sambalpur.
There is a yellow warning of thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind (40-50 kmph) for the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda and Nayagarh.
On May 31, thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind (50-60 kmph) may occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places in the districts of Gajapati and Ganjam.
Similar weather condition with wind speed of 40-50 kmph is also likely in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Puri, Khurda and Nayagarh.
On June 1, there is a yellow warning of thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind (40-50 kmph) for the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places in the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda and Nayagarh.
Hot and humid conditions may prevail at isolated places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda and Nayagarh from May 29-Jun 1.
On June 2-3, thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind (40-50 kmph) may continue in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places in the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda and Nayagarh.
