Malkangiri: Road communication between Malkangiri and Kalimela was disrupted with a key bridge going under 3 feet of rising water near Kankarkonda in Malkangiri district on Sunday.
Following this, commuters were left stranded on either side of the bridge.
Water bodies in the southern Odisha district have begun to swell at many places following incessant rain for the past three days, triggering a flash-flood like situation.
Also on Sunday, the Regional Meteorological Department predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in several places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Nuapada, Kalahandi and Balangir districts.
The heavy rainfall is being attributed to a low pressure formed off the Odisha coast in Bay of Bengal, which has intensified further, and the axis of monsoon trough that is still active.
The rainfall activity is expected to increase in the first week of August as a new low pressure system is likely to be formed in the Bay of Bengal by July 31, the Met office added.
