Bhubaneswar: Normal life was thrown out of gear in Odisha following heavy rainfall in the last two days under the influence of a well-marked low pressure over the Bay of Bengal.

Road communication between Bhubaneswar and Kakatpur in Puri district has been disrupted after a temporary bypass road at Garapada was submerged by floodwater of Dhanua river on Monday. Hundreds of acres of paddy fields were submerged and the district administration had to cut off the bypass road to release the floodwater. As a result, all heavy vehicles have been diverted to Nimapara and Kakatpur via Balipatna.

Hundreds of acres of paddy fields in Kakatpur, Astarang and Gop blocks in Puri district have been inundated following the torrential rain. Several villages in these blocks have been marooned with the choked river mouth blocking floodwater. The villagers have urged the local administration to clear the river mouth for speedy release of floodwaters.

In Kandhamal district, floodwater is flowing over a bridge near Ranipathar Ghat while heavy rain has badly damaged the approach road of a bridge under construction. As a result, road communication between Kandhamal and Boudh has been disrupted.

Due to heavy rains in the upper catchments, the false roof of an under-construction railway bridge over Jonk river between Raipur and Visakhapatnam in Chhattisgarh near the Odisha border was swept away on Monday.

Till reports last came in, Bansadhara river was flowing near the danger mark at Gunupur in Rayagada district and Kashinagar in Gajapati district. Nagabali, Udanti and Tel rivers are also flowing near the danger mark.

Heavy rain in Kalahandi district has disrupted road communication in more than five villages in Kalahandi district.

In Ganjam district, there was a gradual rise in the water level of Badanadi, Leharakhandi, Baghua and Rushikulya rivers passing through Bhanjanagar sub-division. Road connectivity to Galery was disrupted after a temporary bridge was swept by the floodwater of Badanadi on Monday.

In Kendrapara district, high tide has entered Satabhaya area following a breach in the Lunagheri embankment leaving people in a state of panic.
