Bhubaneswar: A fresh low pressure, brewing over the Bay of Bengal, is threatening to disrupt Durga Puja festivities in Odisha.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rain in several districts of the state till October 3.
“A cyclonic circulation is likely to emerge into the north Andaman Sea on September 30. Under its influence a low-pressure area is likely to form over north & adjoining central Bay of Bengal around October 1,” according to the midday bulletin.
There is consensus among various weather models (NCEP GFS, ECMWF, NCUM, IMD GFS) about development of low pressure area over north and adjoining central Bay of Bengal around October 1 with movement towards West Bengal-Bangladesh coasts, with some guidance also suggesting a possible track toward the Odisha coast. While probability of cyclogenesis (formation of depression) over Bay of Bengal is nil, the system may trigger enhanced rainfall activity over coastal Odisha and adjoining regions from October 1 onward, coinciding with the Durga Puja celebrations, potentially affecting festive outdoor events and travel plans.
According to the Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC) of SOA Deemed to be University here, the system may take a north-westerly direction after its initial movement in a northerly direction. “In case factors continue to be favourable, the low pressure area would concentrate into a depression on October 2 and cross the Odisha-West Bengal coast on the same night or October 3 morning,” it said.
Under its influence, moderate rainfall will occur in most places of coastal and north Odisha districts on October 2 and 3. The districts to experience the rains will be Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Deogarh, Dhenkanal, Sundargarh, Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Balangir, Boudh, Sonepur, Angul and Nuapada, it added.
