Heavy Rain To Lash Odisha Today; Yellow Alert Of Thunderstorm & Rain Resumes Later This Week

Bhubaneswar: With southwest Monsoon still active in Odisha, several districts in the state are likely to experience heavy rain till Saturday morning, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Friday.

According to the midday bulletin, heavy rain may lash one or two places in Sundargarh, Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Angul, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Sambalpur and Deogarh district during the day.

“While the cyclonic circulation over central parts of interior Odisha and adjoining Chhattisgarh now lies over southeast Madhya Pradesh, the Monsoon Trough is passing through Jaisalmer, Kota, Raisen, Pendra Road, Jamshedpur, Digha and thence east-southeastwards to Northeast Bay of Bengal.”

While light to moderate rain will continue, there no weather warning for next two days.

On September 11, yellow warning of thunderstorm with lightning has been issued for one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati,Angul, Dhenkanal, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada and Kandhamal. There is also a forecast for light to moderate rain or thundershower at most places in coastal Odisha and at many places in Interior Odisha.

While thunderstorm with lightning  is likely in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Angul and Dhenkanal districts during the subsequent 24 hours, heavy rain may also resume on September 12 with yellow warning sounded for one or two places in Ganjam, Kandhamal, Angul, Cuttack, Nayagarh, Kalahandi, Boudh, Gajapati, Rayagada, Dhenkanal, Koraput and Nabarangpur. Light to moderate rain or thundershower is also likely at most places across the state.

There will little change in the weather thereafter, it added.

According to the extended weather outlook, Odisha may witness fairly widespread rain/thundershower on September 8, scattered rain/thundershower from September 9-11 and fairly widespread to widespread rain/thundershower thereafter till September 14.

Isolated heavy rain and heavy to very heavy falls may occur in some districts from September 8-14. Overall rainfall activity likely to be normal, it said.

The IMD further added that widespread to fairly widespread rain/thundershower is also likely from September 15-21 and overall rainfall activity likely to be slightly above normal.

Since the beginning of this month, the state has received 101.7 mm rainfall, which 30% more than the normal of 78.2 mm.  However, Odisha is still experiencing a deficit in rainfall this monsoon season, having received 885.0 mm against the normal value of 992.7 mm till September 8. While nine districts have recoded a shortfall, 21 are in the normal category.
