Heavy Rain Triggers Floods In Four Odisha Districts

Bhubaneswar: Heavy rainfall for five days has triggered flooding in four districts in Odisha.

Malkangiri

According to reports, more than half of the area in Malkangiri district has been cut off from the rest of the state due to the swelling of Gobari river.

Road communication between Malkangiri and Kalimela on NH-326 has been disrupted due floodwaters flowing at a height of 8-10 feet over the bridge at Kankarkonda. Besides, road communication between Kalimela and Padia has been disrupted due to overflowing of floodwaters over a bridge near Kanyashram.

In Khairuput block, a bridge near Pujariguda was swept away by the swirling floodwaters on Sunday night. As a result, road communication from Khairput to Baja Jural, Pujariguda, Katraguda, Balikunda and Kiram panchayat has been disrupted.


The reports further said that the road communication from Malkangiri to Jeypore, Balimela and Kalimela has been disrupted as the floodwaters are flowing over the bridges and culverts in Pangam, Poteru, Kankarkonda and MV-37 panchayats.

Dhenkanal

In Dhenkanal district, the floodwaters of Ramiala and Damasala, the two tributaries of Brahmani have wreaked havoc in Bhuban block. People of Malapura, Odhana, Jayapur, Kashipur and Sialajodi panchayats have been marooned by the floodwaters.

Balasore

In Balasore, the floodwaters of Jalaka have entered Rasagobindpur, Morada, Chitrada and Suliapada panchayats in Basta block.

At Mathani, the floodwaters Jalaka were flowing at a height of 6.36 metres against the danger level of 5.5 metres at 11 am.

Cuttack

In Cuttack district, road communication in most places in Athagarh block has been disrupted due to overflowing of floodwaters of Mahanadi.


Briefing the media on the flood situation, Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Sudam Marandi said that the collectors of the affected districts have been asked to assess the extent of damage and submit their reports.

“As briefed by the collectors of the four affected districts, people in the low-lying areas have been shifted to safer places and arrangements are being made to provide them with food,” he added.

The minister also said that the district collectors have been asked to stay on high alert in view of the formation of a fresh low pressure over North Bay of Bengal in the next 48 hours.
