Phulbani: As heavy downpour triggered by low pressure wreaked havoc in several parts of Odisha, a culvert was washed away by gushing water in of Kandhamal district snapping road connectivity and leaving many villages cut off from rest of the world on Tuesday.
Following incessant rainfall, a flood like situation cropped up and a culvert over a rivulet was swept away in Baliguda of the district, paralysing road communication to other parts of the state, sources said.
Normal life was thrown out of gear in different parts of Kandhamal as the highest volume of 302 mm rainfall was recorded by IMD at Baliguda during the last 24 hours.
Several villages in Baliguda, Tumudibandha, Budaguda, Nuasahi, Sirla, Pariguda and Nuagaon were cut off from the outer world as many roads remained submerged by rain water.
The bus stand in Baliguda encountered severe waterlogging, while the main road in Budaguda was under four feet high water, they said, adding that the administration geared up to deal with the situation.
Due to torrential rain, rivers, rivulets and streams in the hilly areas were swollen and gushing water inundated roads in low-lying areas, snapping communication and disrupting vehicular movement.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD)’s regional centre in Bhubaneswar has warned of heavy rainfall in different parts of Odisha till Thursday under the influence of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal.
Yellow warning for heavy rainfall has been issued for Kandhamal as well as districts like Cuttack, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Nayagarh, Kalahandi and Nuapada during the period.
