Bhubaneswar: Life has come to a standstill in Malkangiri and Mayurbhanj districts, owing to heavy rain in the southern and northern districts of Odisha since the last two days.

Road communication to several places in Malkangiri district has been disrupted with rainwater flowing on a bridge near MV-96 village. Though the floodwater of Pangam river has receded, plying of vehicles
between Malkangiri and Jeypore has been stopped as roads in several areas on this route has been swept away.

People of Ralegada and Dhuliput panchayats have been marooned for one week due to overflowing of the floodwater of Sarku river. As the people of these two panchayats primarily depend on this river to move to other areas of the district, they are not able to move out of their village due to the high flood. They alleged that the district administration is yet to complete the construction of a hanging bridge on the river.

Road communication between Khairput and Ramakunda has also been disrupted with a culvert being swept away by the floodwaters. Besides, three villages in Khairput block have been cut-off from the mainland by the floodwater.

Flood threat has been looming large in Mayurbhanj district following heavy rainfall in the last 48 hours.

Road communication between Baripada and Udala remained cut off after a temporary road was swept away near Karanjia by the floodwater of Kansa river.

In Sundargarh district, rainwater entered  houses in low-lying areas in Rajgangpur. Following opening of the three gates of the Kansabahal dam, floodwater is flowing on the Bileigada bridge near the Ghodhar Dham of Lord Siva. Considering the situation, the district administration has temporarily stopped plying of vehicles on the bridge.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD), in a release on Tuesday, forecast heavy rainfall in 18 districts of Odisha with extremely heavy rainfall in Malkangiri, Koraput and Nabarangpur districts in the next 12 hours under the influence of a low pressure in the north-west Bay of Bengal.

However, rainfall will continue for 24 hours in the north Odisha districts with more rainfall in Mayurbhanj, Jharsuguda, Keonjhar and Bargarh districts as the low pressure will move over these districts towards Madhya Pradesh.

Most parts of the state would remain dry from August 22 to 25, barring north and north-west districts where there will be moderate rainfall on August 24 and 25 due to a monsoon trough stretching from the North Odisha to the West Bengal, the release added.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the north-west and west-central Bay of Bengal in the next 24 hours due to turbulent weather conditions.
