Bhubaneswar: After most parts of Odisha experienced a sharp rise in temperature, coupled with acute humidity for a week, Met agencies have now predicted a change in the weather condition with heavy rainfall in the next five days.
According to a forecast by the Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC), there will be a gradual change in the weather condition in Odisha in the next 48 hours, from June 27, as a low-pressure is most likely to form over the north-east Bay of Bengal by June 29 and drift towards the state’s coast by afternoon on June 30.
“There is a distinct possibility that the low pressure will intensify further and turn either into a depression or deep depression. Under its influence, rainfall activity will start in the coastal districts from June 30 with heavy to very heavy rainfall on July 1 and 2. The interior districts will also receive moderate to heavy rainfall after July 2,” CEC director Dr Sarat Chandra Sahu told mediapersons on Tuesday.
On the other hand, a mid-day weather bulletin by the Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar has predicted heavy rainfall at one or two places over the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Nabarangpur and Koraput on June 28 and 29.
Referring to the vagaries of monsoon in Odisha, duty officer at the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, Prabhat Beuria, said the monsoon trough has changed its course and is now tilting towards the Himalayan range in the north. As a result, there has been scanty rainfall in Odisha for about a week.
Stating that the deficit rainfall in Odisha by June 24 was 20 per cent, he said as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast beginning June, there will be normal rainfall in the country. “As there has been less rainfall in Odisha in June due to the late onset , the deficit rainfall in the state will be replenished in July,” Beuria said.
