Paralakhemundi: With heavy rain lashing five South Odisha districts since Monday night, the Gajapati administration shifted around 500 people of four blocks along the coast to cyclone shelters as a precautionary measure.
As informed by the district administration, people residing in the hillside areas of Paralakhemundi, Raigarh, Rampur-Udayagiri and Gosani blocks were shifted last night.
Anticipating landslides amid continuous rainfall, the administration has directed the block authorities to keep a strict vigil and take immediate steps to evacuate more people from the hilly areas of these four blocks.
Notably, several houses in the hillside villages of Gumma block were completely damaged during heavy rain in October last year while 13 people of Raigarh block had died in a landslide triggered by Cyclone Titili in October 2018.
Meanwhile, Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Pradeep Kumar Jena has directed the collectors of all coastal districts to remain on high alert and closely monitor the situation in the low-lying areas along the coast to ensure the safety of the people.
