Kathmandu: Authorities in Nepal on Wednesday warned residents in central, western and eastern parts of the country to stay on high alert after heavy rains pushed water levels in three major rivers past their alert thresholds, PTI reported.
Data from the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology’s Flood Forecasting Division showed that by 6 AM on September 2, the Sun Koshi in Sindhuli, the Budhi Gandaki in Gorkha and the Mahakali in Dadeldhura were all above their alert marks.
A day earlier, the division had reported that the Marsyangdi River in Lamjung had breached the danger level at the Bhukundebesi monitoring post at 11:15 PM on Tuesday.
The latest bulletin from the division indicates that water in the Marsyangdi is still rising.
Officials say the increasing flow has heightened the risk of floods in affected areas.
With the river now above the danger limit, downstream communities have been told to remain watchful, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) said.
People living in low-lying zones along these rivers have been advised to take special care as flood danger continues.
The alert comes as Nepal grapples with unbroken monsoon rains, with many regions — including Kathmandu — receiving continuous rain these days.
