New Delhi: Police in the national Capital have beefed up security around the new Parliament building, which will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday.
Twenty Opposition parties have decided to boycott the ceremony, protesting the Centre’s decision to have Modi launching the building rather than President Droupadi Murmu and terming it as a ‘grave insult’ and ‘direct assault’ on democracy.
Delhi Police have received information about some possible ‘anti-PM’ and ‘anti-India’ slogans and posters that could be put up by miscreants.
Delhi Police Special CP Deepender Pathak said over 70 police personnel have already been deployed in and around the area, and CCTV surveillance of the area is being carried out.
“Our focus is to maintain the law and order situation and carry out the programme (inauguration ceremony of new Parliament building) tomorrow. We will ensure enough police deployment for tomorrow’s event,” he told ANI.
Wrestlers who have been protesting against national wrestling federation chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh have also decided to hold a women’s mahapanchayat in front of the new Parliament building to draw attention to their demand to arrest Singh.
Though Vinesh Phogat said they will hold a peaceful mahapanchayat on May 28, it has been learnt that Delhi Police haven’t granted permission to wrestlers.
In fact, police will be closing all borders to prevent such a demonstration.
