Heavy To Very Heavy Rain To Lash Odisha Today; IMD Issues Yellow Warning For 3 Days

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday forecast heavy to very heavy rain at one or two places in Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Deogarh and Keonjhar districts in Odisha during next 12 hours.

Heavy rain may also occur at some places in Bargarh, Sonepur, Balangir, Angul, Dhenkanal, Mayurbhanj, Cuttack, Khurda, and Puri. Yellow warning of thunderstorm with lightning has also been issued for one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balangir, Boudh, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Khurda, Ganjam and Puri.

The intensity of rain is likely to steadily decrease thereafter with heavy rainfall at one or two places in Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada on August 25. Thunderstorm with lightning is also likely at one or two in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Dhenkanal, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Malkangiri and Koraput.

Light to moderate rain or thundershower may occur at many places across Odisha on these two days.

The MeT office has sounded yellow warning of heavy rainfall at one or two places in Malkangiri and Koraput on August 26. Thunderstorm with lightning very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Mayurbhanj, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Koraput and Nabarangpur. There is also a forecast for light to moderate rain or thundershower at many places in coastal Odisha, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Dhenkanal, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Malkangiri and Koraput and at a few places in the remaining districts of the state.

While there is no more warning for Odisha, light to moderate rain may occur at a few places across the state during the next two days with little change in the weather condition in the subsequent two days, the weather agency added.

Notably, Tangi in Khurda district record the highest rainfall of 145 mm in the last 24 hours followed by 81.2 mm at Bahalda (Mayubhanj), 76 mm at Athagarh (Cuttack), 71 mm at Bhuban (Dhenkanal), 69mm at Udala (Mayurbhanj) and 61.2mm at Sukinda (Jajpur). 

Odisha has recorded 760.2 mm against the normal of 838.8 mm till August 24 this monsoon season. While two districts have received excess rainfall, 11 are deficient and the rest 17 districts in the normal category, according to the regional centre here.
