Helmets Compulsory For Pillion Riders In Odisha From March 1; Know The Fines Under MV Act

Bhubaneswar: Once the three-month relaxation period ends in February, pillion riders in Odisha will be fined if found without helmet.

Speaking to mediapersons after a road safety meeting in New Delhi, Transport Minister Padmanabh Behera said helmet will now be mandatory for pillion riders and strong action will be taken against defaulters.

Section 194D of the MV Act makes helmets mandatory for pillion riders.

Seat belt for persons travelling in a four-wheeler will also be made compulsory, he said, adding that the drive against traffic violation will be intensified from March 1.

No decision has been taken on reduction of the fine amount, he said, adding that Odisha has urged the Centre for more funds to reduce road accidents by 20 per cent in coming days.

The Minister said that there is also a proposal to deploy squads in every 30 kms to check traffic violations.

The government had relaxed the enforcement of the new traffic rules under the Motor Vehicles Act-2019 for three months in September last year and extended it by as many months on November 28 in view of heavy rush at RTO offices across the state.

Here’s a recap of the fines under the new Motor Vehicle Act 2019:

Drunken driving – Rs 10,000
Not wearing helmet – Rs 1000
Not wearing seat belt – Rs 1000
Over speeding – Rs 5000
Wrong side driving – Rs 5000
Dangerous driving – Rs 5000
Jumping red light – Rs 5000
Triple riding on two-wheeler – Rs 1000
