Here’s What Canada’s New PM Mark Carney Said About Country’s Relationship With India

Toronto: Mark Carney will succeed Justin Trudeau as Prime Minister of Canada. He has won the leadership race for Canada’s Liberal Party. While running for the to’p post, Carney had said he would ‘rebuild’ relations with India if voted to power, reported the Times Now. Canada’s strained relationship with India reached its lowest point during Justin Trudeau’s tenure.

He also responded to a question on tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump on Canada. Carney had reportedly said: “What Canada will be looking to do is to diversify our trading relationships with like-minded countries and there are opportunities to rebuild the relationship with India.”

The 59-year-old had won 86% of the votes to defeat former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland. In January, Trudeau had declared that he would resign after over nine years in power. The ruling Liberal Party held a quick contest to replace him.

Who is Carney?

Carney is a newcomer in politics. He is a former central bank governor. He was born in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, in 1965. He attended Harvard before spending 13 years at Goldman Sachs. He joined the Bank of Canada as deputy governor in 2003, left for a finance ministry position in 2004, and returned in 2008 as governor. He led the central bank through the financial crisis of 2008-2009.

In 2013, Carney became the first non-British governor of the Bank of England. He also served as a United Nations envoy on finance and climate change.
