Kolkata: Following Virat Kohli’s announcement of stepping down from captaincy on Saturday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly hailed the 33-year-old as a “great player” and said that the board respects Kohli’s decision.
Earlier, Kohli had relinquished India’s T20I captaincy after the team’s disastrous T20 World Cup campaign in the UAE.
Ganguly took to Twitter and lauded Kohli saying that the star batter will play a huge role in taking forward the current team.
“Under Virat’s leadership Indian cricket has made rapid strides in all formats of the game ..his decision is a personal one and Bcci respects it immensely ..he will be an important member to take this team to newer heights in the future. A great player. Well done @BCCI @imVkohli,” tweeted Ganguly.
Kohli stepped down from his role as India’s most successful Test skipper, after recording 40 wins in 68 matches.
He ranks fourth in the captains’ list with most Test wins behind South Africa’s Graeme Smith (53) and Australia’s Ricky Ponting (43) and Steve Waugh (41).
