Mayurbhanj: A stray dog was hailed as a hero in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district after she fought and killed a venomous snake that threatened a group of over 30 kindergarten students, ultimately losing her own life in the process.
The incident occurred earlier this week near Sri Jagannath Sishu Vidya Mandir in Dhirakula village under Udala block. The young children were sitting and playing outside the school premises when a venomous snake slithered dangerously close.
Kali, who often lingered near the sc
hool, sensed the imminent danger. She immediately sprang into action, positioning herself between the snake and the children. A fierce struggle followed, during which the dog relentlessly attacked the snake, enduring multiple bites while refusing to back down. Kali eventually succeeded in killing the snake, ensuring none of the children were harmed.
Tragically, the venom took its toll. Kali collapsed shortly after the confrontation and died from the effects of the bites.
Local residents, deeply moved by the dog’s selfless act, named her Kali posthumously and organised a heartfelt farewell usually reserved for humans. Her body was draped in a white cloth, adorned with flowers, and taken in a ceremonial procession on a trolley before burial.
The story has quickly spread across social media, turning Kali from an unnoticed stray into a symbol of courage and sacrifice in Dhirakula and beyond.
