Bhubaneswar: A student of Hi-Tech Medical College here was found hanging inside his hostel room on Saturday night.

The deceased has been identified as Nihar Ranjan Rout, a native of Soro in Balasore district. He was pursuing third year in MBBS from the institution.

Police have recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem.

Meanwhile, Nihar’s family members have lodged a complaint at Mancheswar police station, alleging that he has been murdered. They claimed that the medical student was under tremendous pressure as the college authorities were asking him to pay money to compensate for poor marks he had secured in the examinations.

The college authorities have, however, refuted the allegations.

A similar incident had also come to the fore after a third year girl student of B.Sc. Nursing attempted suicide by jumping off the three-storey hostel building of the educational institution. The victim’s family had lodged a police complaint alleging that their ward took the step following harassment by the college authorities.

Later, a canteen boy named Laxman Bala employed in the ladies hostel of the college was detained by police in connection with the case.
