Hi-Tech Thief Nabbed In Odisha Capital

Bhubaneswar: After playing hide-and-seek for more than one and half years, a hi-tech thief was finally apprehended by the Commissionerate Police here on Thursday.

The arrested has been identified as Sanjay Kumar Nishank of Atri area of Begunia block in Khurda district.

Talking to mediapersons, Bhubaneswar DCP Anup Kumar Sahu said the youth, a student of bachelor in Business Administration (BBA), looted a variety of costly items to the tune of about Rs 60 lakh from various locations in the city in one-and-half year.

“The police have seized 778 grams gold and 796 grams silver ornaments estimated at Rs 32 lakh, cash to the tune of Rs 39,504, 43 mobile phones, 29 watches, 26 laptops, three tablets, two LED TVs and other valuables like wrist watches, several inter-connecting gadgets and a bike from his possession,” he added.

The DCP said that a medical student, pursuing his PhD, recently lodged a complaint at the Info City police station alleging theft of his mobile phone, a laptop and an external hard disk from his rented house.

Acting on his complaint, police began an investigation and finally succeeded in arresting him after tracking his mobile phone and identifying the helmet he used during the loot, which was captured in the CCTV in these localities.

“The helmet used by the youth had helped the police to nab him,” he pointed out.

The DCP further said that the accused used to target houses located on the first floor in the private building and apartments. He had no associates and was operating single-handedly mostly in the daytime and evening, taking the opportunity of the absence of the house owners and their family members.

“Police are yet to know the reason as to why Nishak had kept all these stolen items with him for so many days,” Sahu said, adding that the interrogation of the arrested youth is underway.
