In a landmark moment, 15-year-old prodigy Tanvi Patri from Odisha has scripted history by becoming the first Indian woman to reach the badminton final at the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal.
The Balehswar-born shuttler stormed into the summit clash at the Dakar 2026 Games after a thrilling three-game semi-final victory over Japan’s second seed Yuzuno Watanabe, prevailing 21-14, 11-21, 21-19 in a hard-fought 54-minute contest. After storming through the opening game, Patri faced a set-back as Watanabe rebounded sharply to force a decider, but the Indian held her nerve in a high-stakes final game to seal a historic win.

Patri’s spectacular run on November 4 also included a straight-games 21-17, 21-13 quarter-final triumph over Thailand’s seventh seed, Kakanik Kungkaew. She now stands on the threshold of unprecedented glory as she prepares to face China’s reigning World Junior Champion, Yi Xin Zhang, in Thursday’s gold medal match scheduled for 11 pm.
The title clash presents a high-voltage rematch, as the two shuttlers previously met in a closely contested quarter-final at the Asia Junior Championships earlier this year, where Zhang prevailed in straight games.
Training at the Centre for Excellence in Bengaluru, Patri arrived in Dakar with an impressive track record, having previously become the first Indian shuttler to capture both the Asian U-15 and U-17 championship titles. Her stellar performance adds a glorious new chapter to India’s legacy at the Games, building on the accomplishments of previous male shuttlers H S Prannoy and Lakshya Sen, who won silver medals in 2010 and 2018 respectively, and Aditya Joshi, who reached the semi-finals in 2014.
Victory tonight would elevate the young sensation into becoming India’s first-ever Youth Olympic badminton singles champion.
