Chennai: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a chargesheet against another accused in the Tamil Nadu-based Hizb-ut-Tahrir (HuT) conspiracy case.
The chargesheet was filed on Monday against Aziz Ahamed alias Aziz Ahmed alias Jalil Aziz Ahmed in the NIA Special Court at Poonamallee in Chennai, under various sections of the BNS and Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).
According to an NIA release, the case pertains to criminal conspiracy by the banned HuT terror organisation to propagate its anti-India ideology and enforce its founder Taqi al-Din al-Nabhani’s constitution in the country.
“As per NIA Investigation, Aziz was part of the conspiracy which involved recruitment of daris/students to secret classes of the organisation, followed by their radicalization. Along with other accused and HuT members, he was working to establish an Islamic Caliphate in India with military assistance (Nusra) from forces inimical to the nation. Investigations are continuing,” NIA stated.
In 2024, the NIA unearthed a plot by the HuT to campaign against the electoral process in the country. After carrying out raids at Chennai, Tambaram and Kanyakumari, the agency seized documents, digital material and unaccounted cash.
Eleven persons, including Aziz, came under the NIA’s scanner.
A conspiracy was allegedly hatched by the HuT to radicalise youths and use them to overthrow the democratically-elected government, in order to set up a Callifate. The outfit believes that the electoral process is un-Islamic or ‘Haram’ and secret meetings were organised to disrupt the system.
