HMPV Scare In China: No Need For Alarm, Assures India’s Health Ministry

New Delhi: Amid a rise in respiratory illness cases in China, including those caused by COVID-like Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), the Union Health Ministry assured Indian public on Saturday that there was no need for alarm.

Emphasising that the situation in China “is not unusual”, the Health stated that “India remains well-prepared to handle respiratory infections effectively.”

The update came after a Joint Monitoring Group meeting was convened to assess the situation.

“Officials are closely monitoring updates from the World Health Organisation (WHO) and other international channels to stay informed about any potential risk,” the ministry said.

WHO has been requested to provide timely updates to ensure a proactive approach.

“The government is keeping a close watch over the situation through all available channels and WHO has also been requested to share timely updates regarding the situation in China,” the Health Ministry statement said.

India’s surveillance data has not shown any significant increase in respiratory infections or related hospitalisations across the country.

“Viruses like HMPV are already in circulation in India and that existing health infrastructure is capable of managing any potential cases,” the Health Ministry remarked.

Citizens have been urged to remain calm and follow standard health precautions, including maintaining hygiene and seeking medical advice if symptoms arise.

China has experienced a sharp spike in respiratory illnesses, and HMPV has emerged as a major concern, as per reports circulating on social media.

HMPV causes symptoms similar to common cold, cough, wheezing, runny nose, or sore throat. Young children, elderly people and those with weakened immune systems are more vulnerable as the virus can cause severe respiratory complications.
