New Delhi: Five Indian men’s hockey team players, including captain Manpreet Singh, have tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of a national camp in Bengaluru, the Sports Authority of India (SAI) has informed.
Manpreet apart, the other four to be affected by the coronavirus are defender Surender Kumar, Jaskaran Singh, Krishan Pathak and drag-flicker Varun Kumar.
“I am self-quarantined at the SAI campus and am very happy with the way SAI authorities have handled the situation. I am very happy that they made testing of athletes mandatory. That pro-active step helped in identifying the problem right in time. I am doing fine and hope to recover very soon,” Manpreet said in a statement.
The quintet tested positive after returning to the national camp at the SAI South Centre, Bengaluru, following a month’s break.
They had tested negative initially, but Manpreet and Surender started showing some COVID symptoms. The authorities then decided 10 players who had travelled together to undergo the RT-PCR test.
All players who had reported to the camp are under quarantine and have been kept in isolation.
