Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police will take Payal Mohapatra and her boyfriend, Vikas Kumar, on three-day remand to elicit more information on the alleged embezzlement of Rs 95 lakh from CV Raman Global University, on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar.
According to police sources, the woman accountant used to visit the branches of HDFC Bank and Union Bank on the varsity campus with wads of currency notes but instead of the official bank accounts, she would deposit a large part of the money in her own bank accounts through challan.
She also transferred Rs 50 lakh to the account to Vikas, a Jharkhand-based engineering graduate, who had passed out from the same university, through UPI. While most of the transferred amount was spent on online gambling, Mohapatra allegedly went on a trip to Srinagar with her family with the money that she had siphoned off.
A post-graduate, she has been working at the university since 2017 at a salary of Rs 8,000 a month.
She confessed to having embezzled the funds after an audit by the college authorities last month found out about her involvement, the sources added.
