Horns Not Ok Please: STA Warns Heavy Vehicles Honking Multi-Toned Horns In Odisha

Bhubaneswar: The State Transport Authority (STA) of Odisha will impose strict actions against heavy vehicle drivers honking multi-toned horns.

STA issued a notice to drivers of buses, trucks and all heavy vehicles on Saturday to stay aware and not use such horns.

According to sources, STA will conduct a special enforcement drive to keep an eye on heavy vehicles fitted with such horns and contravening provisions of the Motor Vehicle (MV) Act and Rules.

As per section 190 (2) of MV Act, Rs. 10,000 for first offence and Rs. 10,000 for 2nd and subsequent offenses will be fined for violating air and noise pollution. Rule 119 of CMV Rules, 1989 states that no motor vehicles shall be fitted with multi-toned pressure horns causing unduly harsh and alarming noise.

“It is to state that during enforcement it was found that many heavy vehicles are using multi-toned pressure horns while plying on the road which creates noise pollution and distracts other drivers and road users,” the STA said.

The decision has been taken as an initiative against noise pollution and to keep a check on others getting distracted on the road which eventually leads to accidents.

“Multi toned horn prohibited under the said rules has become a nuisance in the state as it is being rampantly used by most of the buses leading to irritating noise pollution. In this context, it is requested to impress upon all your members to ensure not to use multi-toned pressure horn in their vehicles while plying on road,” the STA added.
