Bhubaneswar: Amid the somber news about death of two friends from Rourkela in the Howrah-Mumbai Mail derailment, a couple of more persons from Odisha have recounted their lucky escape.
One of them is Stalin Das (40) of Bhadrak district. He works at a thermal power plant in Chhattisgarh. He was scheduled to travel with two his two office colleagues in the ill-fated train from Tatanagar to Champa. He, however, cancelled his ticket following requests by friends at Tatanagar. “After seeing my colleagues off, I stayed at a friend’s house in Jamshedpur,” Das told TOI and addd that his colleagues were in one of the derailed coaches but safe.

Similarly, retired Rourkela Steel Plant official Soumen Mukherjee (63) overslept in his hotel room in Jamshedpur and missed the train. The resident of Koyelnagar in Rourkela had travelled to the Steel City to fix his son’s marriage with a Jamshedpur-based girl. He got to know about the train accident after reaching the station, the national daily reported.
