Doha: Saudi Arabia, ranked No. 51 in the world, stunned Lionel Messi’s third-ranked Argentina 2-1 in one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history here on Tuesday.
It was the Asian nation’s first-ever win against two-time World Cup champions Argentina. On the other hand, the result ended Argentina’s 36-match unbeaten run.
No one saw this coming in the Group C fixture as Argentina were considered to be favourites not only to top the group but one of the contenders for the coveted trophy.
But they were in for a rude shock to jolt Messi’s dream of winning the World Cup for the first time in what will almost certainly be his final appearance in the tournament.
Messi, everyone’s favourite player, did score from the penalty spot in the 10th minute to hand Argentina an early lead. The men in white and blue shirts dominated proceedings for the remainder of the first half, having three ‘goals’ disallowed for off-side as Saudis played a high line.
After the change of ends, the Saudis caught Argentina napping with a 10-minute blitz. Saleh Al Shehri and Salem Al Dawsari scoring brilliant goals to jump in front.
To their credit, Saudi Arabia held on to their lead to notch up a very famous victory.
Argentina will have to win their remaining two group league matches – against Mexico on November 27 and Poland on December 1 – to advance to the knockout rounds.
