Hurdles For Raja Acharya’s Release As Police Decides To Move Court Challenging His Bail

Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police has decided to move Orissa High Court, seeking cancellation of the bail granted to gangster Raja Acharya, informed Police Commissioner YB Khurania on Saturday.

“We are consulting legal experts in this regard and will file the petition after receiving required documents from the court,” he said.
Acharya was granted conditional bail by the High Court on Friday in connection with a case pertaining to abduction of an employee of Bhubaneswar-based Jyote Motors and extortion of money from him. The single bench of Justice JP Das allowed him bail against two sureties of Rs 50,000 each.
Acharya had moved the High Court after his bail plea with regard to this case was rejected by the Bhubaneswar Additional District Judge Court in March last year.
Following the court order, Gitanjali Panda, wife of judo coach Biranchi Das, sought security from Commissionerate Police as he was earlier convicted in her husband’s murder and sentenced to life imprisonment.
The gangster had shot the judo coach from close range on April 13, 2008, leading to his death, as the latter had allegedly come in the way of his one-sided love affair with actress Leslie Tripathy.
Acharya had been languishing in Jharpada Special Jail since his arrest from Goa on May 28, 2008, though the Supreme Court had granted him bail in the murder case on March 10, 2017.
Having been granted bail in two other cases against him, the Friday verdict would have allowed him to walk out of the jail.
