Berhampur: Often, it’s the husband and in-laws of a woman who are accused of harassing and torturing her. But police on Sunday arrested a woman for allegedly torturing her husband and his parents in Odisha’s Berhampur.
The woman was identified as Saraswati Patra (45) from Somnath Nagar. Saraswati and her husband, S Anand Patra (50), got married in 2000. They have a son and daughter. Anand, who is also from Somnath Nagar, and his parents used to live in G Udayagiri in Odisha’s Kandhamal district, where he owns a shop.
In 2019, Saraswati demanded that they stay separately from her in-laws. When Anand ignored her demand, Saraswati allegedly started torturing her in-laws and husband, TNIE reported.
Last year, Anand and his parents agreed to return to Somnath Nagar. But Saraswati allegedly continued to thrash him for not living separately with her without his parents. Saraswati also allegedly took away all the gold ornaments in the house, the TNIE report said.
Anand lodged a police complaint after Saraswati allegedly assaulted him with a baton two days ago after he asked her not to harass his parents. Anand, who was injured, had to be treated by doctors.
Saraswati was produced in court, which remanded her in judicial custody.
