New Delhi: Police and other security agencies went into a tizzy on Friday after an improvised explosive device (IED) was found inside an unattended bag at a busy flower market in East Delhi’s Ghazipur.
According to officials, some locals discovered a suspicious iron box inside the bag this morning and alerted the police around 10.19 am.
The 3-kg bomb, aimed at “causing maximum damage”, was defused by NSG’s bomb detection and disposal team. An eight-foot pit was dug to carry out the controlled blast, the NDTV reported.
Visuals from the market show that it was vacated and cordoned off.
The NGS received the information from the Delhi Police around 11 am and the explosive was refused around 1.30 pm, the Hindustan Times reported
Quoting Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana, the NDTV reported that a man had gone to the market, ostensibly to buy flowers from a shop, with the bag around 9.30 am. The abandoned scooty with the bag was spotted a while later, it added.
It is being suspected that the IED was planted to stage a major terror attack before January 26 Republic Day celebrations.
