According to sources, Ashish Pahadi of the West Medinipur in West Bengal had hired the auto-rickshaw to go to Panchalingeswar. Five members of the family were travelling in the vehicle when a car coming in high speed rammed into it near Kuruda under Balasore Sadar police station.

The IIC of Chandipur police station, Sadanand Nayak, who was driving the car, attempted to flee following the accident. But the locals caught hold of him and informed Sadar police station. He was reportedly in an inebriated condition. Later, a police team reached the spot and took Nayak into safe custody.
Taking a serious note of the incident, Balasore SP Sagarika Nath issued an order to withdraw Nayak from Chandipur police station and shifted him to the district police headquarters.
