IIT Bhubaneswar Gets Rs 1.93 Cr Funding For Research On Power Grid Automation

Bhubaneswar: IIT Bhubaneswar has got funding of Rs 1.93 crore from the Central Power Research Institute (CPRI) for undertaking research on power grid automation.

Head of the School of Electrical Sciences, Prof S R Samantaray received the funding for the proposal on “Design, Development and Demonstration of Design, Development and Demonstration of a Centralized Protection and Monitoring (CPM) System within a Distribution Substation including DER.”

POWERGRID Corporation of India is the industry partner for the project implementation. The project is supported under the National Perspective Plan (NPP) scheme of CPRI Bangalore. IIT Bhubaneswar is focussing on some of the emerging areas including Energy, Environment, Manufacturing and computing as major research thrusts supported by national and international research funding, a release from IIT Bhubaneswar said.

Prof Samantaray, the project investigator, said the project will be a paradigm shift in the distribution system automation technology and will bring significant changes in the monitoring, operation and management within the substation integrated with DERs.

Prof Samantaray, a fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineering and Odisha Power Transmission Corporation Ltd. (OPTCL) Chair Professor, is engaged in research and development of smartgrid technologies including PMUs, wide area monitoring systems, micorgrids and power system protections systems since last 20 years.

The research project aims to develop and demonstrate distribution substation automation technology which will replace the large number of physical IEDs in the existing systems, providing state of the art monitoring, operation and control function within the substation. The comprehensive framework includes a centralized monitoring and protection system including Distributed Energy Resources Management Systems (DERMS) considering a microgrid environment.

The developed technology will be demonstrated on the 132/33 kV substation at IIT Bhubaneswar campus and the same will be extended to the substations of distribution utilities.

Director of IIT Bhubaneswar, Prof Sreepad Kalmarkar has congratulated the team of School of Electrical Sciences, for their remarkable achievement and their efforts in industry Oriented Technological Research.
