Cuttack: In a major breakthrough, the Commissionerate Police busted an arms smuggling racket and arrested four persons.
Acting on a tip-off that some persons are having a deal on the purchase of firearms, a team of Chauliaganj police station approached them in the guise of customers and arrested the four persons.
Police also seized five 9mm pistols, 50 rounds of live cartridges, 8 mobile phones and a Hyundai car from their possession.
Talking to mediapersons, Chauliaganj IIC Tapas Pradhan said of the four arrested, one has been identified as Sudhir Swain, a sharpshooter and a close associate of the dreaded gangster Tapu.
Stating that Swain was procuring the arms from Munger district in Bihar, he said the racket was operating for a long time in Cuttack and adjoining districts. “Efforts are on to trace other members of the racket and their link with the suppliers in the neighbouring states,” he added.
