Paradip: An illegal ice cream factory operating in a slum area at the Paradip in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district was unearthed by the food safety officials on Thursday.
As per preliminary information, a team of food safety officials conducted a raid at the factory located in Bhitargarh slum area of the port town. The factory was reportedly functioning without any license, sources said.
Locals claimed that poor quality of ice cream was being produced at the factory under unhygienic conditions. The products were being sold in the local market and nearby areas of the district.
While low quality materials and ingredients were being used in making the ice cream, packaging material used for the products was of very poor quality, it was alleged.
The raid was conducted after the authorities received a tip-off about the unit producing and selling ice cream in an illegal manner, a food safety official said.
During the raid, it was found that the packaging had no mention of manufacturing or expiry dates, while no license number was also mentioned.
As the factory was operating illegally, the owner of the unit was fined and warned. The owner was asked to close down the unit forthwith as the factory cannot be allowed to function without proper license and documentation, he said.
