Bhubaneswar: The Director General of Meteorology of India Meteorological Department (IMD) Mrutyunjay Mohapatra has been conferred with Honarary Doctor of Science (D.Sc) on Monday.
According to sources, he was conferred by Governor Prof Ganeshi Lal on the 39th Convocation of Odisha University of Agriculture & Technology (OUAT) in Bhubaneswar.
Mohapatra is also the Permanent Representative of India with World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and Member of Executive Council, WMO.
With a Ph. D in Physics and 28 years of experience in meteorology, he has made significant contributions in improvement of early warning services of IMD. He brought laurels to the country from international agencies for effective and accurate cyclone warning. He is popularly known as “The Cyclone Man of India”.
He is the author of more than 105 research papers in peer reviewed national/international journals. He edited 18 books and seven Journals. He received awards/recognitions from different agencies including Honorary D.Sc. from FM University and Kalinga Institute of Technology, Fellow, Indian Meteorological Society, Certificate of Merit for Young Scientist by Ministry of Earth Sciences, 25th Biennial Mausam Award, and appreciations from many organisations.
