IMD Issues Orange Alert For Heatwave & Warm Nights In Odisha Till June 14

Bhubaneswar: While conditions have become favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon into some more parts of Telangana and Chhattisgarh during next 48 hours, Odisha will continue to reel under heatwave till June 15.

The weather agency has issued orange warning of heatwave and warm night conditions for Balangir, Sambalpur, Sundargarh, and Nuapada on June 11; Boudh, Balangir, Sambalpur, Sundargarh, and Nuapada on June 12, and Nuapada, Balangir, Bargarh, Sundargarh, Boudh, and Sambalpur on June 13-14.

Heatwave may also prevail at one or two places in Boudh, Jharsuguda, Kandhamal, Gajapati, Ganjam, Sonepur, and Bargarh on June 11. There is also a forecast for thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty surface windspeed reaching 30-40 kmph for one or two places in Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Angul, Dhenkanal, Boudh, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati.

On June 12, yellow warning of heatwave has been sounded for Kandhamal, Bargarh, Jharsuguda, and Sundargarh.  Thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty surface windspeed reaching 30-40 kmph may also occur at one or two places in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Jharsuguda, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati.

Thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty surface windspeed reaching 30-40 kmph may continue in Rayagada, Kalahandi, Koraput, Malkangiri, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati on June 13, and Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, and Kalahandi on June 14.

On June 15, heatwave may prevail at one or two places in Nuapada, Balangir, Sonepur, Boudh, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, and Cuttack. Thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty surface windspeed reaching 30-40 kmph is also likely at one or two places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada and Kalahandi districts.

The MeT office has also predicted a gradual rise in day temperature by 2-3 degree Celsius at many places in the state during next the 5 days with no large change thereafter.

Notably, 41 people in the state have died of sunstroke since March. A total of 159 cases of suspected sunstroke deaths occurred between March 1 and June 9 of which eight were reported in the last 72 hours, the office of Special Relief Commissioner informed on Monday.

While reason behind the death of 45 persons was not due to sunstroke, 73 cases are pending inquiry at the district level, it added.
