Bhubaneswar: With Titlagarh town in Balangir district emerging the second hottest place in the country with 45.8°C after Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh recorded 46 degree, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday sounded extreme heatwave warning for 10 interior districts of Odisha.
Apart from Titlagarh, the temperature soared to 40 degree and above in Angul (42.5), Jharsuguda (41.6), Sambalpur (42.2), Sundargarh (40), Hirakud (41.9), Talcher (44.3), Bhawanipatna (44), Balangir (44), Phulbani (41.8), Malkangiri (43.1), Sonepur (43), Boudh (41.8) and Paralakhemundi (42.2).
Explaining the reason for the steep rise in the day temperature, the IMD in mid-day bulletin said that due to the penetration of the dry northwesterly and westerly wind at lower levels over interior Odisha, the intense heatwave condition will prevail over isolated pockets in this region.
IMD has issued yellow and orange warning for some parts of the districts of Balangir, Kalahandi, Angul, Boudh, Sonepur, Nuapada, Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur and Malkangiri for five days till May 28.
The national forecaster also said that the high temperature will increase heat related illness for the people exposed to the Sun for a prolonged period and those doing heavy work while this will lead to high health risk for the infants and elderly people with chronic diseases.
