New Delhi: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asking him to control leaders from the BJP and its allies and ‘impose discipline and decorum’ on them. This comes in the wake of ‘objectionable remarks’ made against Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi by Union minister Ravneet Singh Bittu and Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad.

Kharge had shared a copy of the letter on microblogging site, X. It started with wishes for the PM on his 74th birth anniversary.

In the letter, he cites that the PM must be aware of the series of recent rude, violent and objectionable statements made against Rahul Gandhi. He highlighted that the trend of using such a violent language could be ‘dangerous for future.’

Kharge mentioned that it was shocking for the entire world that the Minister of State for Railway in the Central government, was calling the LoP as ‘number one terrorist.’  He claimed that an MLA from BJP’s alliance partner in the Maharashtra government had announced a reward of Rs 11 lakh for anyone who could chop off the tongue of Gandhi. Another former BJP MLA from Delhi had allegedly made a remark to make his fate like ‘dadi’ (Indira Gandhi).

Asserting that the Indian culture is known for non-violence, emphasized by leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, he expressed that such statements had agitated crores of Congress workers across the country. To prevent any untoward incident, he stated that stern legal action should be taken against such remarks. He also blamed that the political behaviour of the ruling party was the ‘most rude example in the democratic history’ and due to hate-mongering both Mahatma Gandhi and Indira Gandhi had to sacrifice their lives.

The Congress leader hoped that the PM would take action against such statements.
