Islamabad: The noose is tightening around Imran Khan.
He may have got bail from the high court in some of the terrorism and corruption cases, but now the former Pakistan Prime Minister could be tried in a military court, reported PTI.
Pakistan’s Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah said that Imran was the “architect” of the May 9 incidents in which military and state installations were attacked by his party workers following his arrest in a corruption case.
Sanaullah, appearing on a Dawn news show, accused the 70-year-old chief of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party of personally planning the attacks on military installations before his arrest that day.
The minister claimed there was evidence to prove it.
Asked if Imran would be tried in military court, Sanaullah said: “Absolutely, why shouldn’t it? The programme that he made to target the military installations and then had it executed, in my understanding it absolutely is a case of a military court.”
The minister continued, “His supporters chanted a slogan that ‘Imran Khan is our red line’, and the planning and preparation were done on Imran’s initiative and instigation. He carried it all out. He is the architect of all this discord.”
Sanaullah further said that the evidence is documented “in tweets and his messages.”
Sanaullah’s comments come a day after Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said there was no decision yet on Imran’s trial under the stringent Army Act, though he did not “rule out” such a possibility.
“I don’t rule out the possibility that he was the planner and knew everything (about May 9),” Asif said.
Imran has consistently denied involvement in the violence, saying that he was in jail when the mayhem took place.
