Bhubaneswar: Even as a cyclone Fani gained speed, reaching 100 kmph, in Odisha capital on Friday, the shrill cry of a newborn filled the heart with joy at the Railway Hospital in Mancheswar here.
The baby girl was born at 11:03 am.
According to sources, both the child and the mother are doing fine. The woman is an employee at Coach Repair Workshop, Mancheswar.
Cyclone Fani wreaked havoc in parts of Puri and Ganjam districts in the wake of its landfall with speed of up to 175 kmph at around 8 am.
About 11 lakh people had already been evacuated from vulnerable and low-lying areas of at least 11 coastal districts by Thursday.
The cyclonic system, whose eye is around 28-km wide, is moving at around 30 kmph. But within the system, the winds are reaching speed of up to 175 kilometers per hour that may go up to 200 kmph, according to India Meteorological Department.
According to government sources, no damage, except uprooting of trees, had been reported in Bhubaneswar so far but increase in wind speed might cause destruction to kutcha houses and public infrastructure.
