Cuttack: The mortal remains of veteran actor Mihir Das were consigned to flames at Satichaura cremation ground in Cuttack on Wednesday.

His elder son Amlan Das lit the funeral pyre in the presence of other family members.

Earlier in the morning, the body was taken to the crematorium from his residence at CDA here in a decorated hearse.

Braving intermittent rain, thousands of fans and admirers gathered along the road to witness the last journey of their beloved actor.

‘Mihir Das amar rahe’ slogans rented the air as the vehicle moved towards the crematorium.

The actor was accorded a ceremonial guard of honour before the cremation as ordered by the state government, as actors, politicians and fans present bid a tearful farewell to him.

Notably, Das had breathed his last at a private hospital, where he had been undergoing treatment for kidney-related ailments since December 7, on Tuesday.

Eminent personalities from political, administrative, cine fraternities had paid their last respect to the veteran actor at his residence late last night. Governor Ganeshi Lal and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had also expressed grief over his demise.

The veteran actor, who had won awards for his leading, supporting and comic roles, excelled with his intense performance in every movie.

He was born on February 11, 1959, in Cuttack. In his career spanning over three decades, Das won the Best Actor award from the state government for his performance in Laxmi Protima in 1998 and Pheria Mo Suna Bhauni in 2005. However, it was Pua Mora Bholashankar, which propelled him to stardom.

He also received the Best Comedian award for Mu Tate Love Karuchi in 2007 and Best Supporting Actor award for Prema Adhei Akhyara in 2010. He played the antagonist in 2009 Abhimanyu.
