Puri: Heavy rains in the last two days battered coastal districts of Odisha. The downpour in Puri led to a deluge in the pilgrim town where 352 mm rainfall was recorded till 5 pm on Monday.
Water flowing at about one foot on the roads forced people indoors for the last two days.
The highest rainfall of 530 mm was recorded in Astarang block of the district followed by Kakatpur block which registered 525 mm rainfall.
Several houses in low lying areas remain marooned and hectares of farm lands are under water leading to fears of heavy losses. The Lord in Loknath temple remains submerged for the last two days and in the absence of a drainage or dewatering facility, the temple is still inundated.

The road at Somnathpur between Kakatpur and Nimapara was cut off with the water flowing at least one foot above the road.
However, Konark escaped the intensity of flooding with the formation of a new river mouth at Chandrabhaga.
With the more rains predicted and re alert sounded by the IMD, the residents of Puri hope and pray for less intense spells.
