Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik inaugurated the iconic Rambha Palace, which has been restored and converted into a heritage palace hotel, on the occasion of Utkal Dibasa on Monday.

It was at this palace in Ganjam district that the first session of ‘Utkal Sammilani’ was held. “From hosting the first Utkal Sammilani to welcoming esteemed dignitaries such as Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, the palace has played a significant role in shaping the Odia identity,” the CM said.

Naveen said that the palace, which was built in 1791-92, is ready after five years of meticulous restoration led by the prominent architect Channa Daswatte – protege turned friend of Geoffrey Bawa, and with INTACH’s suggestions. “The intricate textiles and weaves donning the palace sourced from artisans and weavers across Odisha, highlight the diverse cultural wealth of our state. It looks classy and elegant,” he said.

“The creation of this Palace Hotel will allow Odisha to welcome visitors from across the world to experience the unique ecosystem and biodiversity of Chilika Lake, a Ramsar and Unesco World Heritage Site,” he said.

“I would also like to congratulate and commend the Khallikote family and the Late Rani Saheba Sugnana Kumari Deo, a strong leader, who dedicated her life in service to her people, for their astute vision that led to the restoration of this iconic palace and gave it a new relevance in modern day Odisha,” he added.

Even the century-old billiards table at the palace has been restored.
