Glasgow: A popular Indian restaurant in Glasgow that hosted members of the Indian contingent after their successful campaign at the Commonwealth Games, has landed itself in a major controversy for featuring a wrong map of India on napkins.
It was Olympic bronze medallist boxer Lovlina Borgohain, who also won a silver at the Commonwealth Games on Saturday, who pointed out that the map had completely omitted the northeastern region of the country, as reported by IANS.
She soon called out the restaurant – ‘Mister Singh’s India – The Home of Curry’ – for the wrong map.
“The map on the napkins is missing our North East. Every part of India is important and should be represented,” Lovlina told IANS.
She later received support from Boxing Federation of India (BFI) president Ajay Singh, who highlighted additional glaring inaccuracies on the paper napkins, including an incomplete depiction of Jammu and Kashmir.
Singh urged the restaurant management to withdraw it and rectify the map to reflect the country’s complete territorial integrity.
The restaurant is a popular culinary landmark in Glasgow and is often visited by touring sports teams and dignitaries. It is yet to issue an official statement regarding the matter.
It needs to be mentioned here that the northeastern states are a sensitive issue for all Indians. Student and activist Sharjeel Imam continues to remain behind the bars for more than five years now for suggesting that the narrow Siliguri Corridor – connecting the states to the rest of the country – be cut off.
