New Delhi: The Centre said on Monday that Dubai has signed an accord with India to build infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir. This comes at a time when the valley is witnessing the resurgence of violence.
The MoU signed by Dubai, part of the United Arab Emirates, is the first such agreement of investment by a foreign government in the region after the Centre scrapped the special status of Jammu and Kashmir and divided the state into two Union Territories.
According to the Centre, the agreement will see Dubai building infrastructure in the region including industrial parks, IT towers, multi-purpose towers, logistics centres, a medical college and a speciality hospital.
“The world has started to recognize the pace (at) which Jammu and Kashmir is traversing on the development bandwagon,” Union Minister Piyush Goyal was quoted as saying in a statement by news agency Reuters.
According to the statement, different entities from Dubai had shown keen interest in investment in Kashmir.
The authorities moved thousands of migrant workers in Kashmir to safer locations overnight on Monday.
