New Delhi: Amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday spoke to his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu and condemned “terrorism in all its forms”.
“I thank Prime Minister @netanyahu for his phone call and providing an update on the ongoing situation. People of India stand firmly with Israel in this difficult hour. India strongly and unequivocally condemns terrorism in all its forms and manifestations,” PM Modi posted on X.
The Indian Prime Minister had earlier expressed shock over “terrorist attacks” on Israel cities on Saturday when Hamas carried out a coordinated air strike and mass-incursion. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the innocent victims and their families. We stand in solidarity with Israel at this difficult hour,” he had added.
Meanwhile the Israel-Palestine conflict has spilled onto India’s domestic politics with the Congress and the ruling BJP taking contrasting positions.
While calling for an “immediate cease-fire” between the Israeli forces and the Hamas militant group, Congress Working Committee on Monday reiterated its a long-standing support “for the rights of the Palestinian people to land, self-government and to live with dignity and respect”.
“CWC expresses its dismay and anguish on the war that has broken out in the Middle East where over a thousand people have been killed in the last two days. The CWC reiterates its long-standing support for the rights of the Palestinian people to land, self-government and to live with dignity and respect. The CWC calls for an immediate cease-fire and for negotiations to begin on all outstanding issues including the imperative issues that have given rise to the present conflict,” the resolution said.
BJP MP Tejasvi Surya lashed out at the CWC resolution and accused the Congress of being “hostage to minority vote bank politics.” “Congress’s CWC resolution on Israel war is a classic example of how Indian foreign policy was hostage to Congress’s minority vote bank politics, until Modi happened,” Surya posted on X.
