Mumbai: KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan, and Suryakumar Yadav have secured spots in the final 15-man squad of hosts India for the upcoming ODI World Cup, which was officially announced by BCCI chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar and captain Rohit Sharma on Tuesday.
As anticipated, Tilak Varma, Sanju Samson and Prasidh Krishna, who were part of the Asia Cup, could not make it to the final list. “Ashwin and Washington were discussed but you got to pick the best squad.. Kuldeep is there to take the ball away from left-handers and we wanted depth. And we have full faith in the squad,” Rohit Sharma told the press briefing.
The deadline for all cricket boards to reveal their squads is today September 5. All the teams have until September 28 to make any changes to the squad, after which any alterations will be subject to approval from ICC. India’s first game at this year’s World Cup is against Australia in Chennai on October 8 while England will take on New Zealand in the tournament opener on October 5. India will meet Pakistan on October 14 in Ahmedabad.
Harbhajan Singh, however, expressed surprise at the omission of Yuzvendra Chaha, whom he called ‘pure match-winner’.
