Indian Carrier Goes Hi-Tech, Uses Ultraviolet Robots To Disinfect Planes

Mumbai: To allay fears of people who are still not comfortable with the idea of travelling by air in times of coronavirus pandemic, Air India Express has decided to go hi-tech.

The low-cost airline, Air India’s wholly-owned subsidiary, has become India’s first airline to clean and disinfect aircrafts using robotic technology, ANI reported.

Air India Express officials said the airline used an ultraviolet (UV) robotic device with a UV disinfection lamping system at Delhi airport to disinfect its Boeing 737-800 aircraft. They are planning to use this technology at other airports in the country.

The device, they claim, is designed to clean and disinfect seats, under-seat areas, over baggage compartment and cockpit area, reported Financial Express.

The airline said in a statement that the robotic technology has been approved by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration (NABL) after testing its efficiency in disinfecting surfaces from germs, bacteria, and viruses.
